still without a name

The picture with no name..... this is how it's looking..... i think it's about finished now. It's taken nearly a week on and off and it's been great to get my teeth into a larger piece of work. I'm happy with how it has turned out but now i need to turn my attention to whatever comes next. I'm really enjoying reading the blog of a friend of mine who is exploring her creativity and expanding the way she works and I must say I'm a bit green with envy as that's really what I want to do but I don't really know how to go about doing it. I maybe need to just get back to basics and do some drawing and sketching and see where it takes me.... I'm really at a loss for what to do next. This sounds familiar I know, as it's how I was feeling a couple of weeks ago. I need to get my ass into gear and get cracking as thru Feb I have a lot more studio time and I want to use it well!!
Never mind though, its now the weekend and I have all my colleauges coming round tonight for a chilli and some girlie banter, and I'm really looking forward to it. Better go and start the preparations. Is it wine o'clock yet??

Filling in the gaps

This piece of work (still un-named) is coming together and I'm well on the way to completing it. I'm trying to depict some of the things close to my heart.... unity and togetherness, the safety and security of home, and this work features references to infinity, eternity, the circle of life and love. I also wanted to depict the concept of home, and what it means to me. I think I have achieved what I set out to do and I'm pleased with the way it's coming together.
I'm feeling a big boost to my confidence and ability as an artist after a very successful exhibition at The Beetroot Tree in Draycott in Derbyshire. We got some good mentions in the local papers and it seems all ten of the participants sold work. Things are going well, and even though I'm getting limited time to make new work at the moment, I'm hoping that the next couple of months will be very productive. Keep your fingers crossed for me!! I still have plans for a change of direction soon and just need to get out and about for some new inspiration and ideas, which I;m looking forward to once I have more studio days in the calendar.

Here is the new piece I have been working on over the weekend, picture as promised, and it's a heck of a lot bigger than I'm used to so is taking quite a while to finish. It's on A2 waterolour paper, which is great to draw onto as it absorbs the ink really nicely so less chance of smudges!! It is going to be in the theme of 'togetherness' or 'unity' and I'm struggling to think of a name. Maybe it will just become obvious when it is finished.

at first sight

The exhibition at the Beetroot Tree comes down today so i'll hopefully find out whether anymore of my pieces sold. Fingers and toes crossed.....

If this one hasn't sold then maybe it will find itself a new home closer to Valentines Day??

This is the penultimate picture of my new work which is in the In The Frame exhibition. We have been featured in the Guardian What's On, this weekend, so hopefully that might bring in some more visitors!!

I hope you are all having a great weekend. I'm having a really relaxing chilled-out one, just what I needed after a couple of weeks of busy, but enjoyable ones!! The weather isn't anything to write home about at the moment, lots of grey-ness and clouds, more conducive to staying in the house in front of the fire with a cup of tea and a good book, but we are nearly at the end of Jan and a bit nearer to Spring, so not long to go before the nights are a bit lighter and we can spend a bit more time outside!

I'm 2/3rds of the way through my new running regime, which is hopefully going to make me a bit fitter, and I'm thinking about entering a 5K run soon. I just wish it was a bit warmer, I think I'd feel a bit more enthusiastic about going out, but I'm sure I can summon up the energy today, just need to finish my cuppa, make tea, and then maybe I'll do it!!

ah, my fave!!

'come fly with me' was my fave of my newest pieces, finished specially for Beetroot Tree, and I was kinda, looking forward to hanging this one on my wall..... but it sold at the Preview.... really good but kinda sad!!
Ah, yey, it's the weekend... finally... and I have started a big new piece of work. There I was yesterday thinking I'd be starting something 'new' and I just had to do the thing that's been hanging around in my head for a while... I've gone upscale, size-wise, so to speak, and I don't really love the one I did yesterday but I know how I can make it better... so watch this space... coming soon, new pic!!

different worlds

Yey, it's Friday and I have a day off work and am just about to get up to the studio and start some new work. I've already walked the dog, early morning frosty walk down by the Trent and I'm now feeling invigorated and chilled out (literally, it was -5C) and ready to get to work.
We have a weekend at home, after a couple away from home, so I'm looking forward to just being here and maybe getting some jobs done and may even squeeze in a couple of runs. I have set myself a bt of a challenge this year and want to achieve something 'running-wise' before I'm 39 again!! At the mo I'm slowly poddling along, trying to get my stamina up a bit so I can run comfortably for 30 mins. I'm starting gently and slowly trying to build up what I can do, I'm halfway thru a three week program I found online, so wish me luck. I don't really consider myself a 'runner', I enjoy it once I get into it, but over the past couple of years I have started with good intentions and then had to stop due to injury, so I'm taking my time this year and being careful. When I think about it, a year ago I struggled to call myself an artist, so give me time, you never know, I may, one day, be a 'runner'!! Now, that would surprise quite a few people I know, myself included!!

and then there was three

this one was a new peice of work for the Beetroot Tree Exhibition (finishin this Sunday if you still want to catch it!) and is one of my favourites. I'm enjoying sharing all of my new work with you, hope you like it!

It's finally the end of my working week and I'm excited to be spending tomorrow immersed in my new project in the studio. I think and early night and early start tomorrow (if I can drag myself out of bed!) is called for!! Hopefully I will make a decision about the new project, I have a couple of ideas, one involving plants and the other involving food, but I think I need some inspiration, so may spend a bit of time tomorrow browsing through some blogs, a bit of flickr and some design websites. I need to get my links on this new blog sorted so you can check out my faves too.

our house

our house, the place I love to be, but at the moment it seems that I'm just not here enough, due to being away the last two weekends and working all week!! This weekend though, I'm here and I'm really looking forward to spending some time cooking, reading, walking, running, sketching and sleeping, before I wake up on Monday morning and have to do this all over again!!

we three

Number four in the series for the current exhibition at The Beetroot Tree, 'We Three' features a family of birds at the top of their tree.
Ok, it's been a long and busy day and I haven't much to tell you so I'll just leave it that for today. Bye for now.

in love

another sentimental soppy title from me, unashamed romantic that I am. I'm sharing my ten pieces from the In The Frame exhibition, currently showing at The Beetroot Tree. This one may well make a fab Valentines gift, who knows??

This week I'm working extra in my day job so studio time will be limited to Friday, and I'm already organised with my list of 'to-do's so I can spend my time efficiently for a change. I am hoping to place the tea-towel order at the end of this week, which is very exciting as it is something I have wanted to do for a while now, to expand my range and have a little more choice for the lower price bracket part of my 'birds of a feather' collection. After the tea towels are finalised and ready to be sent off I then have to decide what to do next. I keep being told things will fall into place, but my impatient side is winning and I'm finding myself constantly trying to decide on the new project of 2011...... impatient and indecisive, not a good combination, as it leads to added frustration with myself. I think I may even just need to go out sketching for the day or to revisit the sketch a day sketchbook that I started this time last year....

In The Frame - Meet the Artists Preview

a little bit about us

one piece from each artist

textile piece by Jane Withers

Willow weaving with silver wire - Rachel Carter

Granny quilt in glass by Barbara Coulam

Well, after surviving a hen weekend in Chester and living to tell the tale, I have finished off my rather busy weekend with a visit to the Beetroot Tree Gallery in Draycott, as it was out first Creative 10 exhibition preview. In The Frame is based on the premise that the ten artists in the group each exhibit ten small 'taster' pieces of their work in 15x15cm magnetic box frames, with one larger signature piece on display also. It looks great, what a fab way to start the year!!
We entered a competition last year to win a two week exhibition at the Gallery and we were the proud winners! Today was a real celebration of our work, the end of our Nottinghamshire Creative Mentorship course that brought us all together in the first place, and also the fact that we have made a fantastic team effort and put on our first show together. Long may this continue. The gallery space is in a gorgeous listed barn in the village of Draycott and our work looked great in this setting. As you can see from the pictures I have included some pictures of the whole things and also some of the individual pieces. The final effect was very pleasing, I hope you get the chance to visit, you have until next Sunday if you would like to, or watch this space for our next one!!

Falling for you

I know, I'm just a big soppy idiot, who loves a bit of romance! Here is new work number two, currently on exhibition at The Beetroot Tree Gallery, Draycott, the second original ink illustration in a series of ten, 15x15cm on watercolour paper, framed in a lovely magnetic box frame.

Today, I have a day in the studio, and I think I'm putting it off.... the reason being that when I get in there I don't think I have the slightest inkling of what I want to start the year off with. I think the birds needs leaving alone for a while, the kitchen themed work may be a good place to start, but I am thinking maybe I need something completely new to do. Answers on a postcard please! Maybe I need a pep-talk from my sister!!

One thing you may or may not know about me is that I'm terribly indecisive, it does take me a while to make decisions where there is so much choice. Should I have a morning browsing blogs, looking through old sketch books, writing?? I think I have been spending so much time on the ink illustrations I'm getting a bit 'stuck-in-a-rut' and am wanting to branch out into pastures new, but want to keep a similar vein running through my work, so it isn't too different from what has become my 'thing'. Am I just being silly, or should I just go and get on with things rather than procrastinating and making excuses. Maybe I just need to open a brand new sketchbook and see what happens!!

Home Sweet Home

This is the first of ten new pieces of work I currently have in an exhibition at the Beetroot Tree Gallery. It's an adaptation of an original I did a while ago, and it's an original ink illustration 15x15cm in a lovely white box frame. I have another nine to show you so pop by tomorrow for more.
I finally have finished my working week so now have two days in the studio and doing jobs etc so I am hoping to be struck by inspiration at about 9am tomorrow, keep your fingers crossed. It's been one hell of a busy week so far, so I'm hoping for peace and tranquility tomorrow before zipping off to Chester for a fab hen-weekend!!

Sneaky Peek

Here are a couple of photos from our In The Frame Exhibition at the Beetroot Tree Gallery. It was an open competition we, as the Nottinghamshire Creative 2 group, won!! I couldn't be there to help with the hanging, but it looks like the group did a fantastic job. I'm off to the Preview on Sunday and am sooo excited, will post more pics when I get them!!

Happy New Year

Well, here I am at last on my new blog, it's all feeling a it new and 'not-quite-lived-in' yet, but I think I'll feel a bit more at home when I get my familiar bits and pieces around me, my favourite links, stockists, folksy shop etc.... but I'm here, settling in and just wanted to tell you what I have been up to.
Apart from lovely family time with my folks, and a lovely New Year with friends, things have been ticking over quite nicely here at my house. I have ten new pieces of work in an Exhibition 'In the Frame' with nine of my Nottinghamshire Creative colleagues. It was 'hung' today at The Beetroot Tree Gallery in Draycott near Nottingham and we have our official opening on Sunday, where you can come along and meet the artists.

I hope to be posting on a more regular basis now I have a bit more time on my hands so please update your links to my new site and keep in touch to see what's happening over here, and to find out about my new plans for 2011.
