Sketchbook Peeks - Rebecca Dawson

Before we start, tell us a little about yourself/how did you get into art/craft/design career and how it all started and where you are now
I have studied Art and Design continually for the past eight years and have just finished a Design Degree at Liverpool Hope University, specialising in Ceramics and Textiles. Since July 2012 I have been building up the start of my own business. I am currently working on a new ceramic range which will be extending on my continual theme of personal journeys and the collection of memorabilia.

How long have you been using sketchbooks?
I have been using sketchbooks since I found a real passion for Art and Design. For the past eight years I have continued a variation of work throughout my books.

How often do you sketch?
I am constantly sketching and designing so sketchbooks are essential for me to always have with me.

How do you feel about the prospect of starting a new sketchbook?
A blank book of white pages is always daunting to me at first. To make my books more inviting to work in I adapt the pages with emulsion, watercolours, photocopies, scraps of material and paper.

When/where do you get your inspiration for your sketchbook pages?
My initial inspiration is what is familiar and accessible to me. Natural forms, nature and texture are a huge part of the sketchbook content. I work freely inside my books and what I am inspired by usually creates a ‘happy accident’ for my sketchbook.

How would you describe your creative process?
My creative process is to be care-free when drawing, collaging and mark making and just to get the information down. I feel this gives a more honest concept to my books and shows a true development in my ideas. I work within collage as my main way to record information, and I think this enhances the aesthetic of my work. My creative thoughts are always focused on the texture in which I could form.

Have your sketchbooks evolved over the years and if so, how?
They have definitely progressed and evolved over the past few years. I used to work in a very neat and restrictive manner. Now I work with linear lines, expressive ideas and don’t worry so much about precision which has in fact made my work much more interesting. I have also found that I am not so restricted to the certain size of a sketchbook now, and enjoy the challenge of working to different sixes and perspectives. 

What is your favourite medium to work with?
Collage is my preferred medium and I use it as my main drawing tool. I think collage creates textures and depth that drawing and painting can’t and I like to include that in my books.

Do you have a favourite sketchbook?
My favourite sketchbook is the one I produced while away on a family holiday. It is very different in comparison to my other works, in terms of my use of vibrant colours and some of the imagery. However it has a very personal feeling to the book when looking at it.

If you had to pick one favourite page which would it be and why?
I would choose one of my collage pages because it expresses a personal journey to me but is so abstract to anybody else.
